HIKE/TREK

Boot Height, sits mid-calf for added protection and warmth. A sturdy companion.

RIBBED SUPPORT

No slipping, no bunching, and no blisters. The ultimate fiber for breathability and comfort in all conditions, the All Weather Performance means cool in the summer, warm in the winter.

PERFORMANCE FIT

There’s nothing like twelve gnarly miles with an 80 lb. pack to get you thinking about a sock that delivers more in the cushioning department. Our Full Cushion Hiker sock delivers comfort that won’t quit and durability for the long haul.

TRUE SEAMLESS

Undetectable seam fusion for an ultra smooth, invisible feel. Darn Tough uses high density knitting techniques, which means there are more stitches per inch. This leads to a more comfortable, durable, great fitting sock with no added bulk.

SUSTAINABILITY

Darn Tough aims to improve the well-being of our community by locally designing and manufacturing the most comfortable, durable, best fitting socks while continuously reducing our environmental impacts.

MATERIALS IN OUR SOCKS

Every material we use in our socks has been carefully chosen and tested to meet our rigorous durability standards. We currently use natural and synthetic fibers, and only 3 types of fiber per sock. As you’d expect, we are actively investigating and testing new fibers and yarn blends that do not appear in our current products. We’ve prioritized Merino wool throughout our product lines and our goal of producing the most responsibly made product is reflected in our commitment to the success of the Responsible Wool Standard.

merino woolmerino wool

MERINO WOOL

Merino wool is the most important and relied upon fiber in our products and accounted for 56% of our yarn consumption by weight last year. For many years we’ve prioritized the use of Merino wool exclusively from sheep that have not been exposed to the practice of mulesing. In early 2019 we made a commitment to support the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) and shift 100% of our wool supply to RWS-certified Merino wool.

RWS is a voluntary standard with strict guidelines to protect animal welfare and adhere to progressive, sustainable farm and land management practices while maintaining traceability throughout the entire supply chain.

Although the market share for RWS is only estimated at ~1% of global wool production, the number of certified sources has grown substantially over the last couple years. Today, 100% of the wool we procure is RWS-certified.

recycled nylonrecycled nylon

RECYCLED NYLON

We use REPREVE, a nylon 6 fiber made from pre-consumer industrial waste that would otherwise be landfilled or downcycled. Using REPREVE instead of virgin nylon allows us to offset the use of crude oil, benzene, cyclohexane, and other harmful hydrocarbons that are involved in the production of virgin fiber. In short, using recycled nylon conserves energy and water and reduces greenhouse gas emissions from manufacturing. While we aim to reduce our use of virgin nylon in our products, recycled nylon only accounted for 4% of our nylon consumption last year.

We’re actively working with our suppliers to source more recycled nylon so we can incorporate it across our product lines. To date, nylons generated from pre-consumer waste material have held up well against our durability requirements, but we’d like to find an equally good source of post-consumer recycled nylon or yarns that blend both pre and post-consumer nylon.

spandexspandex

SPANDEX/ELASTANE

We use Lycra to provide elasticity, strength, and form-fitting comfort. While spandex accounts for no more than 5% of the fiber used in our finished product, it represented 27% of the raw materials we procured last year. Like conventional nylon, spandex is derived from petroleum and has been important to the performance of our products. Unfortunately, it’s the most difficult material in our fiber mix to replace with a recycled alternative.

When it comes to synthetics, we’re primarily focused on converting virgin nylon and polyester to recycled alternatives. However, we’re also looking for functional, recycled spandex alternatives.

SOCK CAPITAL OF THE WORLD

We live and work in Northfield, Vermont. Our backyard is the perfect testing ground to make the finest Premium All Weather Performance Socks. We ski, snowboard, hike, bike and run in the most unforgiving climate in the lower 48. It is under these conditions that we design, test and manufacture our socks.

STILL MADE IN VERMONT, USA

After so many decades why do we still knit every pair of our socks here in Vermont? We don’t do it because it’s the easy thing to do—we do it because it’s the right thing to do. We do it because for us, it’s the only way to do it. There are faster and cheaper alternatives but nobody ever outsourced anything for quality.

ONE FAMILY – We are family owned. For 40 years we’ve been knitting socks in the Green Mountains ONE MISSION – Darn Tough is a family-owned, American manufacturer of end-use-specific socks. ONE MILL – Every step of the knitting process happens right here, by us, locally, in Northfield, VT

Without question, the BEST socks on earth.
I bought these as a gift for a female friend. With her high standards and discriminating eye, I was afraid these wouldn’t measure up in terms of quality or function. Turns out, she wears them every day. In addition, I was worried about ‘thoughtfulness’ (c’mon, socks for a female friend… DANGER!). She raves about the eclectic color combinations, warmth, durability and comfort. She is petite, and gets cold by a fan in the summer. Lucky for me she absolutely LOVES these. They size well, have a cushioned sole, and the neck of the sock hold them up even with her skinny legs. She loves the heavenly feel and even sleeps in them some night in lieu of worrying about slippers in the dark. They are mostly Merino wool, with some nylon and spandex thrown in to give a foot-forming-fit. Made in Vermont, USA.Put your cultural bias aside. Buy these for your cold-footed friend and you’ll both be comforted.

    Lifesavers for delicate feet!
Love them! Not my first pair of Darn Tough, I bought these ones specifically to break in new Docs. I’m super prone to blistering and bruising my feet and I have really thin skin on my heels; I was NOT looking forward to breaking in that thick leather. Imagine “The Princess and the Pea”, but with every pair of shoes, ever. Ouch. I already had some raw skin on my heels from the first time I put on my boots, but all I had to to was slap on a bandaid and these wonderful socks and boom, no more pain! Nice and thick padding, my only regret is buying the socks after the boots instead of the other way around since I’m positive I could’ve avoided the raw skin completely if I had just worn these socks right from the start. When I’m not using these to break in boots, I just wear them around the house. They’re very warm, and I have perpetually frozen feet. I’m considering buying another pair a size or two bigger and using them as slippers.I’ve also discovered these are nice for gently compressing my ankles. They’re not designed or advertised as being compressive, but I figured I’d mention it anyway. Just like my feet, my ankles are pretty injury-prone and I’m pretty much rolling at least one of them every couple days. As you can guess, that means they’re sore and swollen often, but less so when I wear these socks. Good enough for me!

    Warm and comfy
Listen, I hate wearing socks. My feet are always sweaty and overall damp socks is such a gross feeling. I also am a bit sensitive to textures, especially on my feet for some reason, so I really am picky about how my socks feel. Cannot be loose or tight, and definitely not itchy. I bought these because I am visiting Seattle in November, and my feet are prone to being cold. I put them on right away because I caught the flu and had chills. It actually worked so well to keep my feet warm and the rest of me from feeling excessively icky. I was a little nervous because at first it itched my feet a bit, but now that I’ve worn them for a couple days, they feel good. I anticipate these will keep me nice and warm.

  4. Carol

Great Socks for Hiking or Cold Days
Comfortable with great style and extra padding. Lifetime warranty impressive!

  5. Farmer Jane

    Great sock!
Cushioned all over and so comfortable. Fits in my boots and doesn’t bunch up. Warm and cozy. Lifetime guarantee and made from Alpaca with just enough spandex so it keeps its shape. Washed them a couple of times and they are still like brand new.

  6. lawdiva

Fits well, good quality, but no cushiony
Pros:1–For my women’s size 5 feet, these fit well all over, and I am happy that these come in a size S, many socks do not2–Purple and gray patter is nice; Material is smooth, seems to stand up to wearing and washing/dryingCons:1–Socks don’t do much in terms of keeping my feet warm2–Despite claim that the socks have full cushion, whether wearing shoes over them or walking around indoors, I don’t feel any cushion beyond the soles of the socks like any other socks. Conclusion: Decent socks but I wouldn’t repurchase because I prefer cushioned socks.

  7. Brandy

I didn’t think I would be this impressed!
I bought these socks for hiking trip to the Grand Canyon I have planned for April 2020. I just took them out on a preliminary hike. The hike was an easy three mile hike, but it is November in MN, so I was curious how they would work in cool temps. My hike next April will be done in a range of temperatures of (possibly) 30-80 degrees over four days. (It will be a R2R2R hike). These socks did not disappoint. My feet stayed warm. They never sweat, got too hot, or too cold. When I got home, I didn’t even take them off… Usually I am whipping my socks off as fast as I can so my feet will stop sweating. The socks ( and my feet) didn’t even stink (another reason I usually whip my socks off as soon as possible). I just might be buying a few more to wear as my everyday socks! With a lifetime warranty, I believe these might be the cheapest and best pair of socks I have ever owned.

  8. kaydiel

I have small feet and most socks end up sliding up my heel. These fit snugly and have great cushioning on the soles. No toe seam!

  9. MontyMuttland

When you’re walking/hiking, you don’t want to be concerned that your feet will get uncomfortable or that you’ll get blisters from material rubbing your skin. You also don’t want your socks wearing out any time soon. These Darn Tough socks have you covered.

Comfortable socks with thick foot cushioning and not too hot despite in tropical environment. However, due to the thick cushion, the shoes you wear should cater for more space, at least half to 1 size bigger, so that your feet will not feel so tight.
